Goodwood Day 1

Paul Jacobs tips up two winners on the first day of this week's Glorious Goodwood meeting

Paul Jacobs gets off to flyer at Glorious Goodwood, with two winners, in Scriptwriter and Yellowstone.

Goodwood Tuesday

With the weather likely to dry the ground up considerably on Monday and Tuesday we should get perfect going for the start of the Glorious Festival, which shouldn’t inconvenience too many of the contenders.

With that in mind, I make SCRIPTWRITER, top weight for the mile and three quarters Detica summer Handicap Stakes at 4.35 the best bet of the day.

Unusually for a son of Sadler’s Wells, this five-year-old has not been at his best when there has been give in the ground, but his form is bordering on very smart when he gets top of the ground. Arguably his best run came when winning at Hamilton on his seasonal debut when touching off Camrose in game style.

Penalised 4lbs for that effort he couldn’t get home in the home stretch in the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap at the Royal meet on very soft ground and has been dropped a pound to 100.

A big scopey individual I expect this better surface to play to his strengths and a big run is expected at the main expense of Samurai Way and Castle Howard.

Earlier on the card have a second look at NIGHT CRESCENDO in the opener at 2.15. Amanda Perrett’s charge was a real eye-catcher at Newmarket in the spring but has had several problems since then and not run.

This is a lovely individual, and I expect a massive run here with a fast pace, if there is market support for the horse at the stable’s local track where Amanda’s father Guy had such a good record.

If that support doesn’t come in one of the most competitive races of the whole meeting, then top weight Championship Point along with recent import Formax could take the beating.

Elsewhere, Aqaleem will obviously be all the rage for the St Leger trial, the Gordon Stakes at 2.50, but his price is more than likely to reflect that and I think YELLOWSTONE, a horse that has not run a bad race all season is the one to be on.

I have backed this horse for substantial money for the Doncaster Classic and he can finally claim his big prize here before descending on Town Moor.
