American Football
NFL preview part 3

The tough AFC South is given a thorough breakdown as Iain Fletcher continues his NFL preview

AFC CONFERENCE SOUTH

Pre-season Standings

Jacksonville Jaguars 3 - 1
Tennessee Titans 3 - 1
Houston Texans 2 - 2
Indianapolis Colts 1 - 3

The toughest division of them all. Period.

The Colts, Titans and Jags all made the play-offs last year and the Texans damned nearly joined them. The fact is the Colts have dominated this Division for years but Marvin Jarrison is 36 and struggling and Peyton Manning has a bad knee. Is it enough to knock them though? Probably not this year but the rest are breathing hard won their necks.

Tennessee Titans - Vince Young can improve and develop and the Titans have plenty of runninng options with bulldozer LenDale White up the middle and speedsters Chris Henry and Chris Johnson round the edges. If Young casn tighten up - not throw the ball and not gamble and gift interceptions this team can shock. Pressure on Young though!

Jacksonville Jaguars - David Garrard was their best ever rated QB last year but their offense is based on hard running and lots of short passes. They have little wide or deep threat which means defenses can stack the box and work on shutting down plays. That they failed last year was due to Garrard's cool decision making and accuracy but to win big you need at least to threaten to throw big and they do not do that.

Houston Texans - I love this newest franchise. They are working hard, improving each year and mix wild old pro's with lots of eager young bucks. Of course they are a work in progress but with such a swift and aggressive defense now they are working and progressing well. This was not the case last eyar in defense and it cost them but plenty of hard recruits could show this year. Andre Johnson is the gun man out wide - 9 matches and 8 TD's but they need a running game desperately.

Indianapolis Colts - Manning, Manning and Manning. He is older, tired, injured and yet still lazers the ball under pressure to win game after game after game. Do not write him or them off although I do believe it is time for their ascendancy to be toppled - this year or next.

PREDICTION

The Colts are still the team to beat but the Jaguars running game should do them at least once this year. It's between these two teams for the Division
