Piloted poker programme aims to reel in UK primetime mainstream audience

A high concept idea, which could see poker finally brought to the masses, has been piloted by 12 Yard – the producers of hit TV show The Weakest Link.

Party Poker Doubles pairs up four sets of contestants to compete against each other. But rather than promoting standard collusion, the pairs play from within soundproof booths, allowing the audience and/or viewer to hear their thoughts, fears and strategies.

While it’s hardly likely to be taken up by the World Series of Poker players’ committee, it could make inroads into Saturday night primetime TV. The format might not appeal to poker purists, but the show could be an ideal introduction to the game for the uninitiated – and that would mean more fish to fry online.

Deputy managing director of 12 Yard, Mike Beale, said: "The idea is to open up the game to novices as players will discuss the hows and whys of their actions. Conventional poker shows assume the viewer knows what they’re doing, which turns a lot of people away."

The pilot took place in London at the end of last year and is currently being pitched to broadcasters. To get involved with the second show go to www.12yard.com.
