Freeroll 4 of the Fourth Betfair Grand Prix was played on Monday night, attracting 763 eager runners plus eight PokerPlayers, all with attack in mind.
It was a ruthless freeroll all told, with aggressive play and cutting banter in big supply. It was 2,000 chips apiece, 15 minutes levels with blinds starting at 10/20.
First to go was Grand Prix III winner derbyred in 627th, who lasted all of 30 minutes, and didn't win a hand, losing the majority of his chips with trip Jacks against a rivered flush, after a 25 times the Big Blind bet on the turn didn’t put anybody off.
The last hand was an all-in with 7-7, which got called by A-Q. It was a performance which pushed Derbyred to say: “I might just sit out the next game, as I might last longer.”
There was a fair old gap to the next exit, which was HillyFish in 394th, followed in quick succession by dudek in 365th.
Darklord5’s tournament was going OK with early discipline and small-pot play paying dividends. Pretty much card dead, he managed to pick a few spots and gather a few chips, without taking too many big hits.
He made the first break with around 1,600 in chips, and with the blinds increasing to 75/150, and 350 or so players remaining, it was time for a bit of push-fold poker.
Unfortunately darklord5 found himself on push-fold enthusiast Shafty78’s table. Sat next to each other, with darklord5 acting first, a semi-epic battle ensued.
The two PokerPlayers managed to avoid tangling for five or so minutes before darklord5 pushed with Q-Q and got a quick call from Shafty78, who flipped A-K.
After a King arrived on the flop, followed by another on the turn, darklord5 was caught feverishly typing abuse into the chatbox, and missed seeing the miracle Queen arrive on the river to make his full house.
Yes it was a two-outer, but let’s not forget darklord5 was originally ahead with his pair, and a huge favourite, 57% to 43%.
The good fortune was not to continue unfortunately, and a few brief minutes later darklord5 was all-in again, this time with J-J against KevNG’s T-T, with a Ten arriving on the flop.
Alas, Shafty78 was unable to continuhe his good run in the Grand Prix and was next to go in 291st as his A-K got ambushed by barca8’s A-A.
That left KillHill, K_Unknown and Dicey left in, and they exited in that order.
KillHill encountered a surfeit of testosterone at her table, and busted out in 169th place to Uneek when her open-ended flopped straight draw failed to hit.
It was this down to the other two to go deep, after both players enjoyed healthy stacks earlier in the tournament.
K_Unknown in particular, who trebled-up early on with a flopped straight, and was sitting pretty in the top ten for a while, was looking for a big finish, but neither were able to properly capitalise with the blinds steepling.
He departed in 68th, after a shove with K-Q failed, leaving Dicey to battle on, eventually succombing to Richy G.
As Dicey put it: "after missing my chance to build a monster stack after losing 3 ‘races’ where I had a dominating ace, I eventually shoved with 8-8 – and ran into J-J, which held up.” Thems the breaks.
So that was that. Congrats to chrismorris who went on to win the Freeroll and automatic qualification to the Live Final, and everyone else that conjured top 30 points scoring finishes, and those pesky bountyhunters, who also boosted their points tallies.
Freeroll 5 is set for Sunday 2 March, and it's a deep-stack spectacular with an earlier start time of 4pm, see you there.
